Shubman Gill, a 23-year-old opening batsman for the India National Cricket Team, blasted his first Test century on Friday, December 16, at Chattogram’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium during the opening match of a two-match series against Bangladesh National Cricket Team.

After a strong start, Gill only managed to score 20 runs in the first innings. But he made the most of every bit of the start in the second innings, turning it into an extraordinary century. Before being dismissed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the 50th over, he had scored 110 runs off 152 balls, with 10 fours and 3 sixes.

“For me, it was about how to play according to the field and then be able to score runs. It was very instinctive (to hit a couple of boundaries and get to the milestone).

“When the bowler came round the wicket, there was gap between third man and point. I hadn’t played it the whole innings. And once the field came in, I went over the fielders. When lunch happened, I was batting around 13. When I’d faced 100 balls, I was 70-odd, it’s about pacing the innings. You got to know when to attack as a batter.”

Gill noted that the century means a lot to him, his family, and his friends when discussing his first Test tonne. He stated:
