On December 23 in Kochi, a mini-auction for the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will take place. Aakash Chopra, a former Indian batter, believes that the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) may not pursue marquee players in this year’s auction because they have less money to spend. KKR came in second place in 2021 but missed out on the playoffs in 2022.
With two championships under Gautam Gambhir’s leadership in 2012 and 2014, the Kolkata Knight Riders are one of the top teams in the league. With 11 places to fill, including three foreign players, the defending champions will have the least purse ($7.05 million). They are not in a position to sign elite all-rounders like Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, or Cameron Green.
KKR Can Afford To Be Part Of Any Bidding War – Aakash Chopra
The Kolkata Knight Riders won’t worry about engaging in any bidding wars at the 2023 auction, according to Akash Chopra, who said as much in a video posted on his YouTube channel. Instead, they would concentrate on filling the remaining spots with the remaining Rs 7 crore.
“If I read out the 14 names that are in their squad, you will say that their XI looks ready already. That’s exactly the case as Kolkata will focus on just filling the remaining slots with the INR 7 crores that they have remaining. I don’t think they can afford to be a part of any bidding war.”
KKR did have a really active trading window during which they added a number of players. Lockie Ferguson and Rahmanullah Gurbaz were bought by Shreyas Iyer’s group from the Gujarat Titans. In addition, they acquired Shardul Thakur from the Delhi Capitals in exchange for Aman Khan.
KKR Will Need Extra Option In The Middle-Order – Aakash Chopra
The Kolkata Knight Riders’ batting lineup from the previous year is still quite formidable. Akash Chopra believes that the Knight Riders need to improve this area in the IPL 2023 auction since they lack bottom middle-order options.
“As far as batting is concerned, the first line of defense seems fine with Gurbaz, the two Iyers, and Nitish Rana. However, they will need an extra option in the middle order, apart from Rinku Singh. They need depth at the No.6 position, assuming Russell will bat at No.5.”
