The BCCI and Indian team management is reportedly unhappy with senior Indian players including captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Despite the Men in Blue winning the opening couple of games of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the BCCI is seemingly angry about the constant failures of big names on the big stage, especially in the T20 format.
The pressure on team India has been mounting with the Men in Blue not winning any ICC silverware since 2013. In the last couple of T20 World Cups, the performances of senior Indian players including the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul have been questionable, to say the least.

KL Rahul had to bear the brunt as he was not picked in the Indian T20 World Cup squad 2024. However, Virat and Rohit have been able to retain their places more likely on the basis of IPL performances and seniority. Virat has been opening the batting for team India alongside Rohit in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. In the first couple of games, he hasn’t managed to go beyond single-digit scores. Rohit, on the other hand, scored a half-century in the opening game vs Ireland but departed cheaply vs Pakistan.
BCCI unhappy with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
This has reportedly irked the BCCI and the senior office bearers are unhappy. They have decided to move on from the current setup of the Indian team in the T20 format with both Rohit and Virat out of the scheme of things. A senior BCCI official in the know of the discussions said that both the batsmen have been told about the BCCI’s intentions if their performances don’t improve.
The BCCI is planning on naming Jasprit Bumrah as the Indian T20 captain with Hardik Pandya being the vice-captain of the side. Bumrah’s workload has to be managed time and again and hence, the BCCI is pondering on handing over the captaincy of the Indian T20I team to Hardik Pandya in those tournaments where Bumrah will not be playing.

Such massive scale changes in the Indian T20 setup have been communicated to the Indian team’s senior members. Gautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman are the top contenders for the India head coach role
In such a scenario, the board is having a discussion with various incumbent coaching options for the Indian team. In that list, VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir are on the radar of the BCCI with the latter already having publically stated that he will accept the opportunity with both hands if it is presented to him.
The coming months in Indian cricket will see a lot of topsy-turvy decision-making in the T20I format. The BCCI sources have clearly stated that the board is completely satisfied with both Virat and Rohit as far as the ODI and Test format is concerned. Meanwhile, the Men in Blue have started their T20 World Cup campaign in great fashion beating Ireland and Pakistan on the trot.
